Insane Clown Posse’s Horror Rap – Christianity Connection

Today’s top hip hop music -- or the top hip hop music of any era for that matter -- is almost always edgy to say the least.  From infamous rap group N.W.A in the early 90s and their cop killing lyrics to more modern top hip hop music where lyrics are heavily sexual, top hip hop music has always found away to weasel its way into the mainstream while remaining controversial.

But with time, the fans of top hip hop music become desensitized. The lyrics that were once rebellious and disdainful become yesterday’s vanilla news. Hence, new micro-genres are born, like that of rapidly growing horror rap.

What is horror rap? It’s plainly described as anti-top hip hop music filled with horror-themed lyrical content and imagery. Because horror rap is about as far as one can travel from top hip hop music and still remain somewhat in the same genre, it’s surprising that some groups find a way to sell well with horror rap.

The most successful horror rap group is unarguably Detroit’s horror rap duo, the Insane Clown Posse.

Yet therein lies a contradiction. If horror rap is about horror-themed content, then why is a group with not-so-subtle Christian lyrics like Insane Clown Posse (see Insane Clown Posse’s “Miracle” lyrics) still considered horror rap?

Better yet, how is the group still gaining more and more new fans after Insane Clown Posse’s “Miracle” lyrics revealed them as spiritual?

Sure, there are plenty of ICP songs that don’t involve any mention of Christianity, but one would tend to think even the slightest mention of a mainstream fixture like Christianity would turn most Juggalos away. Not so.

The first time ICP told the world they were Christian (or at least spiritual – that’s another debate) was in “The Unveiling”, where the lyrics go: “When we speak of Shangri-La, what you think we mean? Truth is we follow GOD!” Even few top hip hop music artists are that blatant about their religious beliefs.

Insane Clown Posse’s “Miracles” lyrics (potentially Christian-tinted) have been the brunt of mainstream jokes since it was released in 2009 – see Saturday Night Live’s Insane Clown Posse “Miracles” lyrics parody. Asking honest questions like “Magnets, how do they work?”, Insane Clown Posse’s “Miracles” lyrics are members Shaggy 2 Dope’s and Violent ‘s way of expressing their wonderment of the universe.

Though all instances within Insane Clown Posse’s “Miracles” lyrics do have scientific explanations, the band chooses to keep them shrouded in mystery they say makes life more entertaining. Do they believe the miracles spoken of in Insane Clown Posse’s “Miracles” lyrics are acts of God rather than science? You be the judge.

Regardless, Insane Clown Posse’s “Miracles” lyrics are a strange amalgamation of religion, horror rap and clowns, the likes of which may never be seen again.

Insane Clown Posse is a horror rap group from Detroit that sounds nothing like the top hip hop music you’re used to. To learn more about Insane Clown Posse’s “Miracles” lyrics or the band in general, please visit http://insaneclownposse.com.
